Like most Birkenstock styles, the name comes from a city, in this case Milan, a fitting nod given the sandal's slightly more refined, considered design compared to some of the brand's simpler slides. The three-strap construction gives it a more tailored put together look, so the name suits a style that leans a little more polished while still being built on that same relaxed, comfort first foundation Birkenstock is known for.
The Milano comes in Birkenstock's core upper materials such as smooth leather and Birko-Flor, their vegan friendly alternative made from acrylic and polyamide felt layers. Leather give a softer, more premium finish that develops character over time whilst the Birko-Flor option is more resistant to water and everyday wear and tear, and doesn't require the same conditioning. All sit on the same cork-latex footbed and EVA sole, so the choice really comes down to look, feel, and how much maintenance you're happy to do.
