Most people find the first few wears feel noticeably firm underfoot and that's perfectly normal. The cork and latex footbed needs time to compress and conform to the unique shape of your foot. Generally speaking though, you're looking at around 2 to 4 weeks of regular wear before they really start to feel like they were made for you, and once they've moulded to your foot the comfort is genuinely hard to beat.
Birkenstocks run in European sizing, which can catch people off guard. As a general guide, if you're between sizes, go up rather than down, you want your heel sitting comfortably in the heel cup without your toes touching the front edge. Ideally a 5mm gap front and back is best. The adjustable straps do give you some flexibility once you've got the right length, but getting the footbed length right first is key. Our fitting guide also has some great tips specific to Birkenstocks if you want to get it right.
Birkenstocks are genuinely repairable, which is part of what makes them such a worthwhile investment. The soles can be replaced by a cobbler who works with Birkenstock products, and the straps and buckles can also be repaired or replaced in many cases. It's one of the reasons people hold onto their Arizonas for years rather than treating them as disposable. If you're not sure whether a repair is worth it on an older pair, feel free to ask us and we'll be happy to give you an honest answer.
Yes and if you'd prefer to avoid animal derived materials entirely, look for Arizonas with Birko-Flor or EVA uppers as both are completely synthetic and animal free. Birkibuc is also a vegan friendly option. The footbed lining on some styles is suede leather so if that's a concern, the EVA Arizona is the cleanest all vegan choice since the entire sandal is made from EVA foam with no animal products at all.
The two metal buckles are designed for easy adjustment and they hold their position well throughout the day. Once you've dialled in the fit, you'll find you rarely need to touch them. A lot of people set them once when the sandals are new and then just slip them on and off from there.
